Seahawks Chiefs Storylines
For the second week in a row the Seahawks take on a former division foe. This time it is the Kansas City Chiefs, and once again it is an away game.
The Chiefs have already faced the Cardinals and the Rams this preseason, with mixed results.
The last time these two teams met was on November 28, 2010 in Seattle. I remember that game particularly well because I had made a bet with a friend of mine, Jay Binkley of Kansas City. It was a straight up bet.
If the Seahawks won, the team at “3 Guys in a Garage” would send me some Kansas City BBQ sauce. If the Chiefs won I would send the “3 Guys in a Garage” Top Pot Doughnuts.
Sure enough, the Chiefs destroyed the Seahawks 42-24. I mailed the crew 2 dozen assorted doughnuts on the Monday after the game. The worst part was having to call in ESPN 810 in Kansas City and concede the victory to the Chiefs’ dominance.
Set at Safety
To me, there is one battle that will be synonymous with the Chiefs vs. Seahawks matchup for the foreseeable future, Eric Berry vs Earl Thomas.

The Earl Thomas draft pick was an absolute no-brain-er.
Leading up to the draft it was obvious the Seahawks needed to take a safety early, probably on day one.
My number one choice was Eric Berry for a couple reasons:
- Eric Berry filled a need
- It would seemingly eliminate any desire Pete Carroll may have had to draft Taylor Mays
At the time, I was doing “The Brett and Brian show” podcast. My partner was a huge Taylor Mays fan, like many were. I spent many broadcasts leading up to the draft arguing that Taylor Mays was not NFL material.
When KC selected Berry with the 5th pick I knew the 6th pick was too early to select Earl Thomas, the small ball hawking safety out of Texas. Thomas surely wouldn’t be available at 14, leaving the Seahawks in prime position to select Mays.
After drafting Russell Okung the wait for the 14th pick began…
Finally the 14th pick had come and Earl Thomas was still on the board, it was a no-brain-er.
The QB Battle
Like just about everyone else, I want to see what Russell Wilson does with the Seahawks first unit against the Chiefs first unit. Unlike a lot of the people I have talked to, I don’t believe this start is about Russell earning the starting job come September.
I believe he has earned the right to show what he can do with the unit. I expect in time, most likely early next week, Matt Flynn will be named the starting quarterback of our Seattle Seahawks.
The Wideouts
The Chiefs secondary is banged up, so I want to see the Seahawks receivers creating separation in the game. No one has really stepped up and taken control at the wide receiver position.

It’s time for Golden Tate to make a statement.
Charly Martin has been the best surprise. I think its time for Golden Tate and Ben Obomanu to make a statement. The other receiver who must show up is Terrell Owens.
After Eric Williams of the Tacoma News Tribune reported that Terrell is acting like T.O. I would say this week is “shape up or ship out” time for the 38 year old receiver.
I think Braylon Edwards is a big game away from locking up a roster spot.
Run The Damn Ball
The running back battle between Tyrell Sutton and Kregg Lumpkin heated up last week. I though Tyrell was going to hand it over to Kregg but in Denver Sutton put his name back into the conversation.
It’s going to be interesting to see which one does the most to distinguish himself.
Protect the QB
Can Alex Barron or Deuce Lutui give the Seahawks a reason to keep them around? I doubt it, I don’t see a reason to keep either of them at this point. There will more than likely be a cut casualty from another NFL team that is an upgrade over BOTH of these guys at this point.
There have been a lot of good surprises that have come out of this year’s preseason. Unfortunately, the Seahawks have also seen their share of bad play.
I for one can’t wait for the first round of cuts.
It is time to trim some fat off this roster.
